Elementary School Children in Ohio Help Dominican Children
Halfway across the country a group of children truly believe what Lynne Moquete so often says, “You can’t change the world, but you can change the world for someone."
In 2006 and 2007, Debra Alba, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer from the Dominican Republic ’90-’92 (and friend of Lynne’s) spoke to her daughter’s classes and shared about the Dominican Republic. The children learned that Dominican children are required to wear a school uniform everyday. If they don’t have a uniform they can’t go to school. Sadly, many children stay at home because their families don’t have enough money to purchase a uniform. The average household income in the DR is approximately $500/month U.S. Uniforms currently cost approximately $20 U.S.
Upon learning about this travesty the kids and their teachers, Mary Jo Sullivan and Tammy Reitter, took action. Many 2nd & 3rd graders joined in as well! They decided to see how much money they could earn by doing chores at home. Every dollar they earned was brought to school. They began to chart the number of uniforms they purchased. To date the children at Britton Elementary have raised $800.00 to provide uniforms for children in the Dominican Republic.
If you would like to help provide uniforms for the children in the Dominican Republic please contact us for more information.
