La Descubierta is close to the Haitain border and influences from Haiti are felt everyday. Following the devastating earthquake in January 2010, increased international presence made it easier for volunteers to cross over the border into Haiti.  In partnership with a family of Dominican missionaries, BHBH volunteers engage with a small mountain community, helping to bring infrastructure to the community by providing needed building supplies and school items. Volunteers are also able to host arts and crafts activities and a soccer camp. There is also an opportunity to spend a night in Port-a-Prince, witnessing first-hand the destruction the earthquake caused. As our partnerships grow, so will Una Vida’s work in Haiti.  Our close proximity to Haiti and deep connection with the struggle of Haitians in the Dominican Republic have led us to focus an increasing amount of our resources in these efforts. Please let us know if you and your group are interested in making this opportunity a part of your trip.
